If you've got a bit of time, there are plenty of websites which can teach you html - eg www.w3schools.com/html/default.asp - this is one I've suggested to people in the past. The nice thing about html is that you can just write it in Notepad and look at the page in your browser to see how it looks, you don't actually need to buy any design software.

Sorry, you've lost me. I'm not clear what you want overall - for just using Wordpress (assuming you have some set of pages at [say, I've not searched for Wordpress] www.wordpress.com/yourname or similar) or whether that's just part of what you want.

Some domain registrations include 'web forwarding' which means someone going to exampleyourname.com could then be forwarded to www.twitter.com/somename or www.facebook.com/somename

That's the simplest, where you need no webspace of your own. Then there are hosting firms which provide just some webspace, so you'd need to do a bit of HTML to create a front page (home page) and that might link off to some Twitter/ FaceBook/ web Blog site.

Other hosting firms offer a bit more - free PHP software that can be installed via some script (so you enter a few details on a form and click, and it will do the rest behind the scenes). Things which might be included are say Photo Gallery, Blogging, Message Board (though getting combinations to work well can take some effort).

Some hosting firms offer a system tool to build your website. Firms like Heart Internet have their own, Google can offer similar (FREE!) though these "site builder" tools sometimes are restrictive over the number of styles / backgrounds / pages you can use, esp when free.

Monthly extras may be charged for some of these tools, when you really only want to design the layout once and maybe a year or two later change the design / colour scheme, etc and paying monthly for the flexibility to do that may be overkill (and costly).

Right, so what are you after with your domain?

Just a way to get to your Blog or for much more?

no! you've lost me!

i have a wordpress blog.

its dead easy - its like typing into mumsnet - so i post somethng and can upload pictures.

i can change backgrounds and layouts by choosing a template

does such a thing similar to this exist - or do i really have to get more techy?

Redoing what Wordpress gives you would be reasonably complicated and probably not cheap.

So one of the easiest things to do would be to redirect your domain name to your Wordpress blog.

So someone enters:
custardo.co.uk and they end up on Wordpress.

Why did you get the domain?

Tortington · 16/03/2011 16:29

i want my own proper site!

What is a "proper" site? What exactly does it do? Everything that Wordpress does? More?

Is redirecting to wordpress if someone goes to custardo.co.uk not enough?

Tortington · 17/03/2011 14:19

ok then that sounds great - how do i do that?

I use www.weebly.com. They give you easy instructions how to transfer your domain over etc (might have got the terminology wrong there) and then will host it. You can then choose different templates and types. It is all free if you don't mind there being a link at bottom to the weebly home page or you can pay a little so that doesn't appear.

Still took me ages but this was my ignorance rather than their instructions!
