I have an I phone 4 but am not very techno literate.

Now, when i got my I phone i synched (right word?!) it with our lap top which is old and slow.

We have since got a new desktop which my I pod is synched to and which has all of my music library on.

If I plug my I phone into the new desktop will it wipe everything off it and upload the stuff from the desktop's ITunes account??

I really don't want to lose anything from my I phone as there are hundreds of precious photos on there.

Hope that make sense, sorry if I sound very dim! Blush

dont synch

are you near an apple shop? you can go in there and get them to copy your photos onto your old lap top, so they are safe

they you can copy then onto your new desk top as well

you shoudln't keep your only copy of precious photos on your phone in case you lose it

Oh lordy. The fun of iTunes. Frankly this is going to get a bit complicated to move.

What is it you want to achieve?

Do you want your ipod and iphone to all share the same account, sync the same music playlists & apps (assuming your ipod is a touch)?

Or do you just want your iphone to be able to sync on its own?

Are you using the same Apple user account for both ipod & iphone?

Having been wrestling with iTunes tonight myself, I'm half tempted to suggest you live with it and save yourself hours/days of hell! Grin

You can enable sharing if they are on the same network. Sign into both with the same account and enable home sharing. Go onto your desktop and there will be a folder in itunes saying "laptop" library, click on that then toggle to items not in this library. Ctrl a to select all then sync them.

The items not on your desktop, will very very......very slowly transfer over to your other computer. You can do this with apps and video etc too. Although when I plug in my iphone, windows offers to import photos, so this could be an option wrt to those?

I had to do this as all my music and itunes was on my laptop which I have had to gaffa tape the power supply to and is threatening to die any minute, I transfered everything to dp's laptop, and have since happily synced.

Hth.

I don't get why apple call it sync, every other mp3 player etc I have ever owned had options to sync both pc/player, pc to player, or player to pc. Why the fuck do they make everything so hard!!!!!!

"Why the fuck do they make everything so hard!!!!!!"

Apple had to jump some hurdles with the record companies and that's one of the big reasons why you can't sync music from an iPod/iPhone to iTunes.

With regards to the music alone you do have a couple of options.

When you connect your phone to your new computer iTunes will ask if it should automatically manage the music on the iPhone. If you say "no" then the music will remain on the iPhone and won't go into iTunes on the PC.

Or you could move the music from the old PC to the new PC, get it into iTunes and then just resync the phone to your new iTunes. Ask if you want more help with that in particular.

It's not the music I'd be bothered about. Worst case scenario you rebuild your music playlists.

It's the photos which are in danger of getting overwritten and wiped if you move PC's without setting up iTunes properly.

Thanks everyone! Sorry for late reply, first day back from mat leave today so been a bit frantic.

From the sounds of it I think I had better save the photos to a disk first before I start trying to do anything. My I phone has no music on so I'm not bothered about that but if it wiped my photos without having them saved somewhere I'd be very upset.

Does anyone know if you can dave to disk on those kodak machine in boots?? Would take years on my laptop!

If all you really need are your photos then you may want to consider installing this application on your desktop and copy them over before you do anything funky with iTunes.

Iphone Explorer

Don't forget any calendar entries, contacts & notes you have and may also need backing up.

Good luck
