Techno Phobe Mother wants Xbox Kinect just for keeping in touch!

My mother, in all her wisdom has decided to buy herself an xbox 360 with kinect and one for me so we can use the webcam bit to communcate. I'm having a baby in April and this is the latest idea she's had to keep in touch.

We have Skype and as far as phone calls go it's fine. However my mums friend has an xbox and can see her grandaughter walk across the living room. I think this is what has sold mum on the idea, as she doesn't think Skype is clear enough to see the important stuff.

Now as much as I love my mum I can't let her spend the best part of £500 on 2 games consoles that will only be used for chatting.

I want to offer her an alternative, better webcam etc but she is not the only technophobe in the family! We both have Wii consoles, is there something similar available for those?

DH thinks I shouldn't put her off as he quite likes the idea of a free xbox, but we don't use the Wii we have so an xbox would just be another thing we i will have to dust!

Can anyone suggest something better?

If you both use PC's at home you can pick up perfectly good webcams for £30-£50.

But as an apple fiend... If you get a Mac it has photobooth which you can do face to face through and it's fab but more expensive than the blinking Xbox.

We both have PC's, but mum likes the idea of having it on the "big telly" in the living room! We can link our TV to the PC, but mums PC is in the loft (don't ask!)
