can they not get on the net? am confused by what's happening

Their Orwellian overlords do not like demonstration in case it leads to the proles uprising so have made a lot of the isp and mobile phone companies suspend services.

Molotov cocktail says far more then a tweet anyway.

has anyone downloaded this yet? it looks a little scary ..

I don't think they are targeting people with technical savvy who will be aware of the following:

Running an internet proxy server will almost certainly be a breach of your agreement with your Interenet Service Provider, and may impose duties on you to keep records and make them available to the police.

There is no guarantee that this software will not expose your personal data to hackers, or be secure against hacking itself which may again result in theft of your personal data.

twitter seems to be coming up with lots of ip addresses where they can link up too :S

I appreciate the sentiment but I don't think running TOR will help.

Most people will not have the time/skills or patience to run TOR.

The reason people have used Twitter & Facebook to organise protests are because they are easy to use. Remember, these are ordinary people. Not clandestine spies.

By the time the Egyptian's get back online, it'll be all over one way or another.

thisisyesterday · 28/01/2011 21:11

losing the internet/phone network won't make a difference

how do you think people managed to communicate before these things were invented? am thinking of cuba, spanish civil war etc etc etc

they reckon that this will cause an even bigger protest than the one that made the govt do this to start with

oh, and agree with mranchovy!

I've been speaking to my friends in Egypt today. They seem most upset about the silence from the president. I think the sooner he declares his intentions the better.

TooPragmatic · 29/01/2011 11:02

I asked a friend about this, someone with a technical background. They replied:

"I don't think you could selectively allow traffic at your discretion (since that's really the point of this). So while you might set it up with the intent of providing an anonymous conduit for people in Egypt, I think it may just as easily be used by, say, a credit card hacker to cover his tracks, or a terrorist or someone distributing illegal material."
