How do I change my mobile network and keep my number?

I am switching from a Vodafone contract to o2 PAYG. I have the PAC code.
Do I need to go to an o2 shop to transfer the number from one sim to another? Am about 2 hours from my closest one...

You may be able to do it over the phone. I'd ring O2 and ask.
