We have always been xboxy kind of people. Since getting the ps3 though I am amazed. Dp has his games etc, but I am loving bbc/itv/more4 player plus the whole lovefilm thing, plus the whole browser thing,I have watched a couple of things on you tube.

It's effing great. Why do they not publicise it more.

Our stupid xbox number 2 is dead, rrod yet again. Sony are stupid, they should be capitalising.

The xbox we have was brand new from them, being a replacement for an original one which developed rrod.

This one has developed rrod within 16 months ffs. Why can't they just build them well in the effing first place.

Looks like you were having a late night :)

I don't have either X-Box or PS2 / PS3 but am I right in thinking some / most online games on the PS3 do not require extra cash to use them, unlike Micro$oft's X-Box ?

The fact the PS2 had a Blu-ray DVD player was another reason some people bought them, as they had dual purpose machine.

Not sure how well some sites work in the browser, unless they have made changes between PS2 and PS3 - someone, anyone, care to confirm/ explain, please ?

Me too, I also love the fact that you can store photos on it (no more gathering around small laptop to show off holiday pics!) and also play your music on it. I agree they don't publicise it's all round brilliance enough :)

I had never been a big game-console fan before I decided to get a PS3 with our new Full HD screen. When I turned up with it, my DW was sceptical at first and probably thought I would spend all day playing games.
She was "converted" though when she saw the upscaling capability to FullHD of non-BlueRay material.
We now pretty much only use it to watch movies and for the occasional Singstar sessions by my DD and her friends.
For listening to music we use other HIFI components, as the PS3 is not exactly frugal when it comes to power consumption due to its 8-core processor.
Internet access is out of question as, unless one can use any BT-keyboard, you have to use the remote to type in the web address.

"The fact the PS2 had a Blu-ray DVD player"

"Not sure how well some sites work in the browser, unless they have made changes between PS2 and PS3"

It's worth pointing out that the PS2 does not have a Blu-ray player, it's not even high definition, and doesn't have a browser with which you can browse web sites.

I'd hate it for someone to pick up a cheap PS2 thinking they can do those things when they can't.

we have 2x PS3 and 2x XBox360 (yes I know) and most of the time we use PS3. It has blue ray, its free to play online games, it has remote play with the psp-go.

In most respects they are very similar apart from the PS3 seems better built (even though there is a broken one in the cupboard which I keep meaning to get fixed) but mainly I like 'feel' of the PS3.

JBellingham · 28/01/2011 10:43

Oh and PS3 has wireless network capability out of the box. Xbox always seems to need 'bits to add on' to same stuff.

NetworkGuy · 28/01/2011 13:01

Thanks BP - my mistake, not having one, nor following too closely the (current) games systems.

Ryoko · 28/01/2011 19:16

They are all as bad as each other, xbox 360 (xbox is the original one and I'm sure you don't mean that) get RROD and PS3 get YLOD.

My PS3 sits collecting dust it is hardly used, I doubt it will be used again until Uncharted 3 is released as thats the only thing worth playing on em.

360 has loads of decent games, I've had 2 360's in about 5 years and both still work, I got the second after the first RROD'd after 4 years but my mate fixed it so now I have two (well 3 I've got a moded one as well).

For everything else I'd rather use my laptop or the PC.

NetworkGuy · 28/01/2011 21:30

RROD is presumably 'Red Ring Of Death'

I know I could hunt and find explanation, but YLOD ?

Yellow Loop Of Death ?

Prinnie · 29/01/2011 13:37

Yellow light of doom - DH says much rarer to get YLOD on Ps3 yet he doesn't know anyone who HASN't had RROD who has an Xbox!

Ryoko · 29/01/2011 13:38

Yellow light of doom, the front lights flash yellow, unlike RROD it isn't a specific fault but it's normally the same thing as RROD (over heating).

360 can display many onscreen messages with numbers that say whats wrong, plus there are different light configurations for the quadrant that mean different faults (RROD is 3 sectors flashing with the top rigt blank).

So at least you have a general idea whats going wrong with em, PS3 it's flashing yellow lights all round.

They are all made by Foxconn anyway, the most reliable machine is the Wii the other two are pretty much on a par with each other, my brother has 4 PS3s all useless because the mirror has fallen off that directs the beam from the blu-ray drive plus spare parts from another 3 he gutted that did YLOD due to them cooking the main chipset, at least RROD can be fixed in 60% of cases altho the thing could last anywhere from a weeks to a couple of years before it dies.

I think the reason why RROD is so more commonly known is simply because there is a hell of a lot more 360's in the world then there are PS3s.

Ryoko · 29/01/2011 13:47

I know 8 people with ps3 2 have had YLOD (one of which has had it twice, the second time within 3 months of getting a replacement one from Sony).

I know about 25 odd people with 360's, I've had a RROD after 4 years but got the thing fixed again, and I know about 9 people who have theres RROD, one of whom has been thru 5 consoles in 3 years somehow.

it's all about the same, at least M$ have a 3 year warranty for RROD.

NetworkGuy · 29/01/2011 13:51

Thanks for the info, Ryoko and others...

Alix81 · 05/02/2011 08:33

We've got both a PS3 and Xbox.

I prefer the PS3 but thats probably because we had the PS1 and then the PS2.

I personally don't know anyone whos had the YLOD or the RLOD.. only read about them online
