My bloody Ipod - messed up sync with computer

I am sorry that this is such a basic question but it is driving me insane.

I had an old computer, with lots of music on it and a perfectly synched Ipod. The old computer died.I had mucho shenanigans to try to get the old music onto the new computer and eventually had to get the man in the computer shop to do it for me.

I have bought a few new things since then which are in Itunes. This morning it said "do you want to sync this ipod with the music on the computer?>" so I said yes, thinking it would sync with all of itunes. It didn't. It's now only got the music I have bought since the new computeron the ipod and all the stuff from the old computer which was in itunes is still there but not on my Ipod.

Does anyone know how to get the whole of one's Itunes library back onto the Ipod? I am really unhappy about it as the music cost me a fortune.

Thanks very much.

Oh dear. That sounds suspiciously like what I did. I never found the music again.

Hang on. I'll go and ask ds1 if he has any ideas but even if he hasn't at least this will bump for you!

Plug your iPod back in to the new computer. Click on the iPod icon when it appears in the menu on the left, which takes you to the white screen with a picture of your iPod and how full it is etc. Scroll down that page, and tick the box that says "Sync music manually", or something along those lines. Now, click back on music, highlight all of the tracks you want to return to the iPod - click the first track, scroll down, click the last track whilst holding down shift, hover over the whole lot and click and hold the left button then scroll the whole list across to the iPod icon - and it should all go back on. And thanks goodness you hadn't deleted all of the tracks from your iTunes, or they'd be gone for ever!

Oh poo, I have tried this and it didn't work. I set the thing to "manually manage" and then highlighted the lot and dragged them over but they are still not on my ipod.

Any idea what I have done wrong or what else I could try?

Try googling your question - always my first cry for help! - also you tube has loads of 'geeky' stuff on recovering music for iPods. Good luck!

google says the same way, which seems very logival but for some reason it has not copied. Will try to grab a technical friend in the week.

So all the music is definitely in iTunes? And when in iTunes you can go through your libary and double click on the tracks to play them?

sybilfaulty · 24/01/2011 19:57

Hi Badger - yes, it's all there and it all plays on the computer. I just can't seem to restore it to the Ipod. It must be do able as if I lost my ipod and had to buy a new one I should be able to get the music on, but it seems not to like this one.

Any suggestions? Thanks for the reply.

Sybil - how many computers have you used your ipod on? I only ask because if you have synced your ipod to more than 5 previous computers, then you can only sync songs you have bought on the 6th computer to that same ipod and lose the rest. You would have to go back on to your old computer to get your old library back on the ipod.

sybilfaulty · 24/01/2011 21:07

Just the 2 - the old one which is now defunct, but which has the old music moved to the itunes library on the new computer, and this new one. I thought the man in the computer shop had fixed it so it was synced with this one but sadly not. When I tried to sync it, it lost most of the stuff.

I have high hopes of a friend's husband who is a technical whizz but if you have any more suggestions in the meantime I'd be delighted to give them a whirl.
