Okay, first of all, stop panicking. Turn off Windows Firewall.

(go to help and type 'turn off windows firewall' and follow instructions).

Then install AVG.

:) Don't worry btw. And next time buy a mac.

Crap NO! Do NOT turn off your firewall!

What you are no doubt seeing is a message from a ROGUE security tool type infection that is trying to scare you into purchasing their totally useless piece of software, and thereby getting hold of your credit card details for fraudulent purposes.

If you drop the firewall on an already infected PC (which yours is - just not with the 20 supposed infections you've been randomly notified about) there's nothing to stop malicious software from "calling home" and notifying the malware writers that your PC is open for them to remove any sensitive password, banking login data, etc.

What exactly is it that's telling you that you are infected - the name of the "security software" that's flagging all these bogus viruses?

no doubt more than likely :)

Yes you are right in saying that someone is trying to get me to buy something, because every time i clicked on " remove viruses " it directed me to a site where i had to buy some more security.I could not solve it so disconnected it and i will be taking it to the shop this morning.Luckily i can use dh,s Thankyou both very much for taking the time to reply.i expect i will be computerless maybe for a couple of days.By the way ,most of the viruses are trojans, one called something pal[ which came up as relating to paypal ] which i dont have anyway, another was called citybank and all things like that, another related to ebay.i will have to change all my passwords when i get it back,But i dont bank online and have nothing relating to my bank on my comp.

Before paying someone to fix it, you might just try Malwarebytes or Spybot Search and Destroy.

Ryoko · 19/01/2011 12:44

If you can't keep windoze virus free get a linux distro then you will not have to bother about viruses ever again.

Agreed re. Malwarebytes....and it's free.

Which is nice.

When you get avg installed, you may need to start windows in safe mode to run it properly. Some viruses load themselves and then block avg running.

If you can't easily get avg installed, you should be able to boot into 'safe mode with networking' and then download avg/install.

Personally, I tend not to take computers to shops unless I really have to - sometimes they don't know quite as much as they'd have you believe.....
