Pay as go go mobile - clueless please help

My DP and I are clueless about how the above work as we are both on contract phones supplied by work.

DS is Orange pay as you go - happy to stay with Orange but the new phone he wants is very expensive on their website even with discount from his phone fund.

Can he buy the model he wants in any shop or from Amazon and just put his SIM card in. Will it definetely work? Are there any disadvantages to doing this?

He can but it would have to be on orange network so would come with sim card but could just put own one in.
Alternatively, easy enough to get a phone unlocked and only costs about £20 and you can then use any sim card from any network.

Thanks for help so far. The one he likes is called Samsung Monte.

He has been doing own research and says it is cheapest on Vodaphone website - but I would check this myself as do not quite trust him. I could also go into one of the shops if I had to. Can reach most of the standard places that sell mobiles easily enough.
