Do I buy a new router?

I have a Belkin, would BT give me a free router?

Help I'm a bit technically dim

Thanks Wink

Ha ha... I can usually point a finger in some other direction, but no, there are times when it's just best to admit defeat :)

SSID is an identification (like a ship's radio callsign) which is used so devices (laptop, mobile phone, Wii) can 'see' the name and channel (frequency) and list the ones it can detect, to allow the user the choice.

If a whole street had bought the same router, every network would be called Belkin54g so it is worth changing to something general (like street name / postcode / area of town) without it being too specific (your own phone number / surname). I mention postcode but only use if there are other houses with same code... Could be handy if item was ever stolen as it 'broadcasts' a beacon and if in a different part of town, would be very clearly nicked!!

Some ISPs create unique SSIDs (Sky, BT) in their routers and also create their own passwords and encryption keys (normally found in their documentation or on a label on base of router).

Once you have changed your SSID there is a lower chance of someone findng out what router it is (there are websites listing the default username / password combinations for many different router manufacturers and models - handy if you get a brand new one, but means you need to alter username and password [and keep a note] to secure your router from unwanted hack attempts).
