iTune upgrade - what's going wrong?

I have an iphone 4, a software upgrade is available. I have sucessfully downloaded other upgrades - but they have been shorter -30 mins or so.

So I've tried to download the upgrade on several occasions (takes 2 hrs or more) but each time, after 2 hrs of appearing to download and getting to the stage wjere it says 'processing', I get an error message saying 'the network connection timed out' hence the upgrade failed.

It tells me to make sure that my network settings are correct, and my network connection is active, or to try again later.

Is it failing because the network is just dropping out at some stage over the 2 hr process, and if so how am I ever going to upgrade the wretched thing, or what do I need to change in my 'network settings'?

Thank you - and sorry for my incomprehension of technical matters! (Off to the MIL so won't respond straight away)

Is there anyone out there....NetworkGuy? Badgerspaws.... Hellloooooo

Please help.... I have now identified that this seems to be a common problem - seehere but their 'assistance' isn't helping me solve the problem....

I'm pretty sure it isn't a network problem at my end.

How do I check that I have the most up to date version of itunes, can one update it just by downloading it again, or do I have to delete it and then redownload it? If so how, and can I keep the same user log in etc?

I am also going to try to pause my Kaspersky virus protetcion to see if this helps whilst downloading - but I know nothing about firewalls, will this solve the potential of it being a firewall problem?

Shiny new iphone, useless computer, I HATE technology....

I had this problem with the iPad upgrade. The problem is not so much with the upgrade but with the registering bit at the end. Are you doing it over a WiFi connection? Try plugging your computer directly into the router and see if that helps, the WiFi can slow it down to the point where it times out. This, ultimately, is what worked for me. Failing that, there are some suggestions here

Hi Slug - thanks for that, I think I've solved it, seems to be an issue with Kaspersky, I paused the protection whilst downloading the upgrade (suggested by your link and others that I had accessed) and the upgrade has worked.

Not ideal but now I need to work out how to ensure that Kaspersky knows that iTunes is 'safe' - anyone any ideas..??
