New Ipod shuffle not showing as a device on iTunes - why?

I'm trying to set up DD's Christmas iPod Shuffle. I've installed iTunes, have put a CD onto the laptop and have connected the ipod using the usb, but it's not showing up as a device. I've run a connectivity diagnostic and it says "no ipod etc found". Help please, as I don't know what to do! TIA.

Forgot to add, when I check on computer, it's now showing up there either.

This may be the reason, but not sure, should the little battery indicator light be on constantly? When I turn the shuffle on, the light stays on for a couple of seconds and then goes off. Is this usual?

Have you tried using a different USB port? My iPod only seems to show as connected on one of mine. No idea why.

Have just switched USB ports but no difference, I'm afraid. When I plug the ipod in, would a prompt box normally come up?

The status light tells you all sorts of things about the iPod, but I'm not sure if it should stay on or not.

When you connect the iPod to a computer what colour does it become?

MaggieW · 14/12/2010 14:37

It only comes on (green) when I turn it on and then goes off, when I connect it to computer it stays off.

Is this a new Shuffle?

According to the manual (manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/iPod_shuffle_4thgen_User_Guide.pdf) the light should stay on when it's connected to a computer and will either be orange (charging) or green (charged).

If you can it might be worth a quick trip to an Apple store as this might be broken...

Thanks Badger, it is a new one, just delivered. I think you are right, I ordered it online, so do you think an Apple store will help me? As a side issue, the internet went down a short time ago, and I rebooted the computer (hence delay in reply). When it came on it said something like "could not connect all drivers". Could this be the reason perhaps?

Apple Stores are usually quite helpful and they might just be willing to see if there's a problem.

I don't think that internet outage is the problem, the provision of power to the USB ports should be separate from their being a driver to actually chat to what is on the port.

I feel such a fool!! I looked on the Apple troubleshooting forum and realised that I hadn't clicked the USB lead far enough into the Ipod. Apparently it's a common problem (she says trying to justify stupidity). Anyway I'm glad it's such a simple problem and is easily solved. Thanks very much for your help.

Ha! That's the sort of thing I do! Glad it is all sorted.
