Copying videos to dvd

We have some home movies - wedding/ parties etc.. (no porn) that we would like to transfer onto dvds but what do we need? I am clueless and wa going to buy dh a device to do this for crimbo. Not sure if i have a dvd writer on my pc and dont want a big fat combo video/ dvd device. Anyone got any recomendations? I have a cd writeer on my pc i know off but how will i know if its a dvd writer?

ok ive fiddled about with my pv and im quite sure it has a dvd writer thingy.

It would have DVD logo (DVD and a disc, as shown on Wikipedia and then probably says DVD ROM/R/RW or similar underneath. If ROM then it cannot write to discs.

What sort of video camera do you have? MiniDV?

What sort of output leads do you have? Red/White/yellow AV, USB?

vid camera is a samsung digital cam, is says on it rw + r + r dual layer. no usb on it but has av output socket thing.

Sounds like your Samsung is capable anyway - some have a hard drive and can themselves write DVDs (or mini DVDs) and judging by the fact it has RW etc on it, you just need the instruction book...

Do you have the model number so it is possible to check for an instruction book online...

Goodmanners. Do put tapes in it or small DVD's?

If its the latter then most DVD players will play these anyway.
