Upfront can you forgive my ignorance on the subject of phones. My mobile is pay as you go, so I don't know much about contracts. I would like to buy a smart phone or iphone for my 18 yo ds. is there a reasonable way to do this? Would you recommend anywhere in particular to go for advice or to buy one? Many thanks.

I always found carphone warehouse helpful as they sell lots of different networks and handsets so will give you advice for what suits you rather than trying to sell you the most expensive. Orange have always been v. good too but obviously they want you to take out a contract with them! Hope this is of some use.

I recently got a San Francisco smartphone from Orange. It cost me only £99 (price now reduced to £84!) and is excellent value for a smartphone; in fact it does most of the things that my dh's iphone does, for a fraction of the price.

I am on PAYG paying a minimum of £10 per month. I'd imagine that PAYG would be better for an 18 year old.
