Can someone answer this question about WOW Cataclysm please?

I used to play WOW, have got back into it and was doing a 7 day freebie thing, still on my old account which the subscription had lapsed on.

So last night I was very excited about cataclysm but wasn't sure if at midnight/11:00pm I wouldn't be able to play anymore as I hadn't bought the disc. Well I could still play this morning.

Wondered into GameStation this afternoon and asked the lad there if I needed the disc as I still seemed to be able to play and things were different such as t he big chasm in the Barrens. He said I did need the disc for new quests, etc.

So I got the disc, installed it. It asked for the key code, I inputted it and it said that I didn't have a game for that code to work as an expansion on.

So I wondered if it was because I was on a 7 day free trial. So I paid up. Put the code in again and it said it wouldn't work as I either didn't have a game for it to work as an expansion on or it had already been inputted.

I've gone onto the game and it looks no different to last night. So how do I know if its installed? Thanks.

Right, I don't think it has worked. Tried to create a new character and it won't let me be a worgen.

Your Battle.net account does not have any games that can be upgraded with this authentication key.
Either you have no games that can be upgraded with this key, or you have already upgraded them.

I'm installing the disc again, it seemed to work ok last time though. Its just this account upgrade thing that I need to do which I can't.

I don't really understand myself either. I can see me having to take my laptop into GameStation and getting the cute guy to do it for me!

Just realised that previous message wasn't wholly coherrent (mulled wine at 5pm on empty stomach prob not the best idea!).

So I'll try again - Did you buy Wrath of the Lich King when that was out? You need that to 'build' the Cata expansion on.

mmmmmm, i've never bought a disc before. But it was WOTLK I was playing before. But only played it via the monthly subscription.

That explains it then. I still don't understand why you have to buy all these things when I seem to be able to play them on a monthly subscription.

So if I buy WOW from the battle site for £10 (it doesn't say WOTLK, just WOW) then that might work. Its a digital version.

You can purchase the games either as a disc or as a digital download - when you played WOTLK did you download it?

(As an aside, when you do get going I have started a Cata thread on chat ;))

I must have downloaded something, but can't rememebr if I paid for it or not. I suppose I must have done. I've been playing WOTLK for sure, but not had Burning Crusade.

So if I've been playing it and do have it then why won't the cataclysm work. Or is it possible to have some basic WOTLK without having paid for the full version?

Ahh - I think here lies the problem - I think the trial allowed you to play the WOTLK edition as a trial, but in order to play cataclysm you need all the expansions (sorry if this is bad news).

So, if you only ever purchased the very original game then you will need to buy Burning Crusade and WOTLK to make Cata work.

I've just looked on the the blilzzard store and you can buy BC (to download) for 9.99 and then WOTLK (to download)fpr 29.99 but it's only £10 for the disc on Amazon.

So for £20 you should be able to get your account upto date so you can play cataclysm.

Actually BC is only 4.99 on Amazon so if you shop around you should be able to get the two previous expansions fairly cheaply. In the meantime you could reinstate your account and play the game I should have thought - but the classic version with Levelling up to 60 etc.

Thanks Prinnie, have found your other thread as well so will come over once I get sorted.

I'm reinstalling the disc and this time its taking ages - still going and only about 30% done afetr 20 mins. Last time it appeared to have installed after 1 min.

So will try the key code again after this install and if that doesn't work will head to amazon. I wish that Blizzard would make things clear on their website.

Have ordered BC from Amazon. Accidently downloaded WOw from Blizzard for £10, I didn't need it as I already have it so now have 2 WOW accounts. Can't bloody afford Lich King now. This is proving to be expensive.

:( as you said in your previous post it's not the clearest of procedures if you've been out of the loop - do you know anyone you could 'sell' the account on to or ask Blizzard for any advice?

Thanks for the offer, thats kind of you. I can run to £10 though and have ordered it. Whole thing has cost me £50 though, plus £9 for a month's subscription. Eeeek. Hopefully Blizzard may refund me £10 back.

Oh well, I'm sure it'll be worth it! Grin

The £10 price at Tesco was a good one, I'd found it for £15 at HMV but £5 saved is good. Thanks.

Ah that's good - I was just feeling very sad on your behalf! At least once you've made the investment you're all up to date and will just need to pay the monthly subscription as and when you want to play.

It will be worth it! Which realm are you on? I might make a little character to come and say hi!
