The only reason I want to get it is to be able to burn dvd's that I can send to my parents abroad. They have only a dvd player. Anybody?

Can't your current version of iLife burn DVDs?

I've never had it, this will be a first time buy.

Most Mac's should come with iLife, it should be on the original disks that came with it if you need to reinstall it.

Mac's can also burn "things" to DVDs without iLife.

However putting together something like a DVD with menus and everything needs something extra software, such as iDVD which is a part of iLife.

Exactly what what are you trying to do?

Thank you, Badgers (blushing). My DH is a complete computer nerd expert so he was annoyed and typed in 'IDVD' and voila.
Now off to make a movie...

You should have iMovie and iDVD on your machine.

iMovie is what you will use to actually make the movie and then you export it to iDVD to make all the menus and then burn it to disk.
