i've just invested in a pvr after my sagem hard disk recorder gave up the ghost after less than a year. i love lots of features, but think i need some advice.

i've connected it to the tv using the hdmi cable, but not getting any sound on bbc1 - sound on all other channels i've selected? also, it defaults to an av channel that shows the picture with no sound and 3 inches trimmed off the picture vertically both sides (hope this makes sense). it can automatically switch back to this setting halfway through roary for example - not a big hit with ds. any suggestions? do i have to take it back or have i done something wrong?

Do you think I should join a real geek's forum?

No idea TBH, read the rubbish manual and see what it says, I had a Humax PVR once, I'll never buy one again, little bastard dropped dead after exactly 12 months, they never replyed to my emails and I didn't have the proof of purchase anymore even tho the thing had 2 year warranty on it.

Got my brother to look at it, thing was faulty from the get go, they had built it in the wrong order so some idiot had tried jamming the main board ontop of the PSU causing it to be bent which overtime stuffed the main chipset.

The manual is rubbish! The only instructions re sound say to press the soundtrack button, but the only option that brings up is whether I want to listen in English or any other languages that may be available. V frustrating. I am going to laminate the receipt and warranty - so pissed off that our last one broke after less than a year.

Yes, that's what is so peculiar. Obviously I haven't tried every channel - there may be no sound on price drop tv too! But all of my preferred channels seem to have sound. Bar bbc1. I can't be bothered to ask dh to look at it - he's frustrated even more quickly than I am.

Digital Spy have a Humax sub-forum for discussion, questions, problems, you could try posting your question there - they seem a helpful lot.

I need a new PVR as my lovely but ageing Digifusions no longer can download their EPGs :( a known situation but not likely ever to be resolved. A lot of DS people seem to have gone over to the Humax.

I would guess that you are not the only person with this prob.
I usually google the exact query to get to a specialist forum, works quite often - worth a try?

Ah thank you both. I kind of thought it was my most un mn thread ever. Love the name, apples. Am I right in thinking it's from catch 22 or am I confusing it with apples in my cheeks?

My brother recommended the Humax due to years of working on there satellite receivers, but he was surprised when he opened it up, said they have gone seriously down hill in the last few years, probably getting the stuff built at FoxConn or something now.

I've been looking to get a new one but frankly I'd just go for the cheapest you can fined, been looking at a Hitachi one and some strange Chinese no brand one, if the things are going to die after 12 months no point spending a lot.

digital spy held the answer - which was basically the it staple 'switch it off and switch it on again'. aesthetically the humax is a lot more pleasing than my 2 previous freeview boxes. even the remote control feels nice! obviously, i wouldn't have a clue what it should look like on the inside.
