A valid Windows?

My screen is now black since yesterday(still have my icons)and a note is saying I might not have a valid Windows. A friend asked what version I had got and when I just went into settings it said the folder was empty. ?!

Does anyone have an idea what might be going on please?
I have had my computer for about 5 yrs. Any problems I have I used to take to my local tech man but he's moved away now.

As far as I am aware I have, and have paid for, a valid Windows and he gave me a note of the license number.

I'm not very good at technical stuff. I havent done anything out of the usual online - just do emails and onto this site mainly.
Could this notification be some kind of virus. How can I tell if its genuine.

Also, sorry I have to go out now but be back later but would be very grateful to receive any help.

Is this what you're seeing:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:WGA_Notice.png

Do you know if you have Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7?

Hi Badger
I have Windows XP.
The very top bar shows (greyed out):-
[M]www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/validation.aspx?PartnerID=1078LegitcheckError=13

A Box states 'You may be a victim of software counterfeiting. This copy of Windows did not pass genuine windows validation.
Another box says 'click Resolve now to get help with the problem.' So I clicked Resolve Now'
It then said 'validation process cant continue as web browser not configured to run components required by the genuine validation process'
Now its saying please Install Activex Control.
Am reluctant to press any more buttons.

So it looks like the screenshot that I posted a link to above?

Can you open Internet Explorer?

Try going to this genuine MS page:
www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/validate.aspx

Try Option 1, if that fails go for Option 2.

BadgersPaws, I am trying to arrange for someone to sit with me this weekend before I press anymore buttons. I'm using another computer in the meantime. I'll let you know what happens!
