is it a plug in earpiece? and what sort of phone is it?

Samsung phone.

It plugs into the top of the phone and then the other end goes in my ear.

If you have tried two and neither works, the common ground is the socket in the phone. If the phone has been bumped with the plug in, there is a chance a wire or contact inside has broken.

What model phone is it ? Are you using a plug in ear piece so you can use the mobile to listen to FM radio ?

I only ask because it may be possible (depending on model of phone) to use a Bluetooth headset (budget end model some months back in Asda Living was only 10 pounds - a price which may be far less than repair of the phone).

It is for talking on the phone when I drive and I only use it when I have too so it shouldn't be damaged already. I have the plug in bluetooth thing but not the ear piece as I didn't like using it. It is clearly something wrong with the phone. Damn, I am sick of buying phones.
