The drive on my MacBook isn't working.

I was about to insert expletives into the thread title but remembered some dear kids may be reading mumsnet.

I have a nearly 3 yo MacBook and to be honest it has been nothing but trouble. I already had the 'screen of death' (i.e. hard drive completely corrupted) when it was out of warranty so replaced the hard drive myself with one from Maplin.

Since then (connected or unconnected I wonder?) I have had problems with my disk drive - not reading some disks, spitting some out, making funny noises like it's trying to spit things out when there isn't a disk in there. I usually manage to get disks out by turning it upside down and enlisting the help of gravity, but now it just won't accept disks - the catch doesn't seem to work at all, as if another disk is already in there (except it's not). I've tried inserting a folded bit of paper in to see whether I can spring the catch but that doesn't work. I'm loath to go to the Apple Store as I know they'll charge me loads, but I feel less able to change the disk drive than changing the hard drive (which was actually quite straightforward).

I have Googled a little and found that many people have problems with the drives on their MacBooks, but I haven't found an answer to my particular solution.

To be honest dp and I are not very impressed with this Mac and will probably buy a PC for our next laptop.

Any suggestions?

I once "fixed" this by putting a largeish screwdriver into the CD slot (not very far!) and twisting it to persuade the slot to open up a bit- it had closed too much and the friction as the CD went in was making it behave badly.

That may not work for you of course but as well as that there are independent Mac repairers who can fix things like that for a reasonable fee. I'm in London and know a few.

Thanks prism. I'm still not sure whether it's worth spending more money on this or giving it up as a bad buy. But I may consider it if the independent people are very reasonable. It wouldn't be hard to beat the prices in the Apple store. Smile
