how to sync email on my iPhone?

Hello geeks?!?

I've got my new iPhone with my email accounts (business and hotmail) working fine, but it's not syncing to my laptop, so when I reply/send/open an email on phone or laptop, it's stays as 'new' on the other...you know what I mean?

I've gone onto the apple/itunes site but the info given is either hard to understand (for me!) or doesn't do anything when I try to do it.

Any tips? My phone is registered on itunes.

I don't think you can. As far as I understand it - Push email works by forwarding the mail through the server to the iPod etc. The copy of the mail will therefore stay there even if you delete the original on the PC.

According to Wiki though you should be able to sync with a Windows Exchange Server ie with Outlook. Maybe an expert will come along in a minute.

I am not sure how to set it up, but I know if I read an email on my iPhone it marks it as read if I look at my email on my laptop and vice versa. Or if I delete, it's gone both places.

I think it just does it for me automatically, but it might depend on what you use to read your email. I use Outlook for business and GMail for personal.

Are you using the normal iPhone email app?

Who is your email account with?

PortoFangO · 29/10/2010 15:14

Found this: no software is needed other than iTunes and hte standard iPhone software! As long as your iPhone 3GS is on 3.1 or later, just do this:

  1. Go to your iPhone in iTunes.
  2. Open the "Info" tab.
  3. Scroll down to Notes and check the box to Sync; don't forget to select Outlook.
  4. SYNChronize yuor iPhone with Outlook.
  5. Done.

Does the OP use Outlook?

Thinking some more what do you use to access your email on your laptop?

Do you use a browser or do you have a "proper" application such as Outlook Express/Windows Mail?

Thanks for the suggestions - I've got hotmail (use izymail) and my business email is through Horde. It synced fine with my old iPhone, but it's just not happening with the new one.

PortoFango - is that to sync outlook emails or everything?

OK, so I went to iTunes, clicked on 'info', but there was no 'notes' to be scrolled down to.

Saw 'sync email accounts from' but there were no options, it just says 'no supported mail application can be found' - but I have two email addresses on my phone in the mail tab (hotmail and horde) so there's nothing to click on

What does it all mean?!?

When did you switch from your old phone to your new phone? Was there any time gap?

On the iPhone those accounts are set up as SMTP accounts (go into Settings/Mail/Accounts (pick right account)) and look at "Outgoing Mail Server". What exactly does it say?

izyMail is acting as a bridge between your Hotmail Account and your iPhone and I suspect if anything's at fault then it will be that. I can see Hotmail changing the way that it works so as to encourage people to use the proper Hotmail Site and see the adverts that make them their money.

BadgersPaws · 29/10/2010 16:45

If you're using Hotmail via a web browser on your machine then don't worry about the "sync email accounts" options, that's for something else (those people who have a full email client application on their machine).

There was no gap really - I had my iPhone 3 stolen, so I bought a new iPhone 4 and had my number ported to the new phone.

I was using the phone just with wifi for the past week until the number ported, if that makes any difference, but it's never synced. (only had it for a week)

I'm sure with my old one it just synced automatically, on both accounts, so I'm sure it's possible, I just don't know how!!
