I'm 99.9999999% sure NOTHING can be done but I thought I'd ask......

I've spend HOURS on a word document, was just at the end of closing down some other documents when I closed this one and said 'NO' to saving changes as I was certain I was on the other document.

I WANT TO CRY!!!!! :'(

It's all lost isn't it?!!!!

ooh, no idea. But masses of sympathy.

Hopefully someone will be along and can help

throckenholt · 09/10/2010 16:30

if you had automatic backups on then you should have a copy somewhere from when it was last backed up - will probably be hiding in a temporary file somewhere - no idea where that would be though.

Now if it was linux then you really would be screwed (as I know to my cost).

latrucha · 09/10/2010 16:31

I think there might be but can't remember what . Just DON'T TOUCH ANYTHING until someone who does remember comes along.

looneytune · 09/10/2010 16:34

Thanks everyone. I feel sick and gutted about this as spent nearly 5 hours updating it and really needed it finished. I was so pleased with things I put and probably would miss something if I start again :( My time is so bloomin precious and ds2 has just woken for a nap so I'm stuffed to get it done today if I have to start again!! :( Don't worry, I'm not touching anything (learn that from when I was a teenager and highlighted a section and pressed delete - not knowing about the undo button LOL).

I can't believe I've been so stupid. I did think it had auto save on it as a lot of my stuff has!!

.

DollyTwat · 09/10/2010 17:31

Do a search for .sav and .doc files on your c drive. If it's been saved as a auto save file you should find it. Or search for files created today around the time you were writing the doc. This might be better. Good luck. Hope it's there

looneytune · 09/10/2010 18:12

Hi. Sorry, was on the phone to my parents seeing if they could help (as they are pretty good with computers)....

I've checked .SAV and it DOES have lots of versions of this document but not a copy from today. It's set to autosave every 10 mins but would me pressing NO to saving make it undo the autosaves and just delete them?

does this help ?

madamy · 09/10/2010 18:17

or this?

MmeLindt · 09/10/2010 19:32

Have you found it yet?

looneytune · 09/10/2010 19:36

I'm back. Thanks for everyone's help, started looking then had to get the kids sorted for bed. No luck so far :( My dad rang again and told me to install some program which may recover the asd file so we'll see.

I'll let you know how I get on. Thanks again for all your help, at least I'm not in the state I was earlier, just wish I hadn't done such a good job with the wording as I know I'll not be able to get it quite the same grrrr.

Thanks again, off to get beer! :)

What version of Word do you have?

slobberedupon · 09/10/2010 19:45

You can also go into explore and ask it to search the entire hard-drive for any files saved on today's date - that could bring it up if it's been saved to a temp file somewhere. i.e. keep all the search criteria blank but specify today's date in the 'last modified' section.

Good luck!!

BadgersPaws · 09/10/2010 21:00

Windows Search is, to be frank, a load of rubbish. It tries to be far too clever and in doing so fails utterly to do what it should do.

Try doing a search from the DOS (Command) prompt.

Find the command prompt, it should be in the Accessories Group in the start menu.

Then presuming that you've got one disk drive and it's C then enter c:

then enter:
cd c:\

Then enter each of these commands:
dir /s /p nameofdocument.asd
dir /s /p nameofdocument.star
dir /s /p ~wrdstar.tmp
dir /s /p ~wrfstar.tmp
dir /s /p ~wrastar.tmp

And where I type star do the star character, which I think does something off on here.

After each one if you find anything that looks like the right date and time use Windows Explorer and copy them somewhere safe.

Then rename then to be .doc files and try to open them in word.

Sorry I never came back, was a tad stressed at the time! Never managed to recover it but spent another 4 hours on Sunday doing it again and it's now all done, printed and handed to parents (I'm a childminder and it was a 53 page Handbook document!). I pressed SAVE, SAVE, SAVE after every small bit!!

Thanks for all your help and advice though :)
