Need help please

Whenever we download video clips like Youtube/music videos/TV programmes we cannot view them, they sort of stick and do not run properly.

The other thing is that the internet is running slower than it used to.

Have run virus scans etc on it but it hasn't helped.

Could the PC be infected with something and what would be the best way to get rid of it, don't mind paying for something if we knew it was going to work?

Many thanks in advance.

You say that it sticks, if you leave it for a few minutes and then go back to it can you watch a bit more? That's the sort of thing that will happen when the internet is running slowly.

Things I would do....

  1. Turn the router on and off.

  2. Do a quick speed check using something like www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk/ and compare it to what you should be getting (a better and more accurate way of doing the speed test will be somewhere within your routers admin web site if you know how to do that).

  3. Presuming you're on Windows run a Malware check on all the computers in the house to make sure that they've not got anything suspicious on them. Something like this will do the trick: www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php

  4. If you've got a wireless router then make sure that you've got security enabled on it so that a neighbour can't "steal" your bandwidth.

And some questions...

  1. How many computers do you have in the house?

  2. Do you use things like File Sharing software?
