"um thing"?

Do you already have a working internet connection through the Belkin Router that other machines in the house are successfully using?

Or is this an entirely new router, internet connection and everything?

Also does the new PC have a wireless network card or is it connecting to the router via a cable?

Break down exactly what the set up is in your house and someone will get you going.

yes it worked fine, we unplugged the thing (usb thing that blinks) and plugged in into new pc, it's not connected with a cable

already have belkin router downstairs

am i making sense?

would we need to re-install the router disk on new pc?

Ah OK so that sounds like it's a USB wireless device? You're able to plug it into other computers and it's fine, but you plug it into the new one and it doesn't work.

You won't need to install the router disk on the new PC.

However you might need to install some software that would have come with the USB gadget in order for the computer to use it. Do you get anything popping up show signal strength or available wireless networks?

It might also be range. Can you try moving the new PC next to the wireless router to check it?

There should also be some config to do on the new computer. You shouldn't have an unsecured wireless network (if you do then ask for advice on how to secure it) and so the computer should be asking for a password or something.

Exactly how to connect to a wireless network varies a lot depending on which Operating System you use. Are you on Macs or Windows?

no nothing, it says cannot find driver for usb, can't seem to find any disk either that may have come with it, can't remember it coming with one

I downloaded a Vista driver for our Belkin USB wireless adaptor from their website because our cd was only for XP, but it still was never very reliable, it had a tendency to make the pc freeze, and in the end we gave up and connected the new desktop via a plugin adaptor that uses the mains wires and an Ethernet cable.
But Windows 7, which I'm assuming is what you have, is a better operating system and it would be worth trying to find a driver to download.
