iTunes question!

I've just installed iTunes on my works PC as i thought it would be handy to quickly download an episode of something and watch it on the train on the way home.

However, i have discovered that if i want to sync my phone with my work PC's iTunes, it'll wipe of everything that's currently on my phone. Obviously I dont want to do this - i just want to add the two episodes onto my phone that i have just bought from iTunes!!

Can anyone tell me how/if i can do this please?!

Thanx! :o

There are some techniques for doing it. But they're fairly involved, and may break quite abruptly for no reason at all.

As a half-way house, on modern iPods you can have the podcasts coming off one computer and the main music off another, so you may be able to do something with that.

Otherwise, full horror: See here

I only use BBC audio podcasts for travelling home, so I have an old 512MByte Shuffle that I keep synched to my work machine for the purpose. That may not be so attractive if you need a video iPod or it's purchased content.

Bloody hell!! That is a horror isn't it!! I cant do it right now as I am not at home so cannot do the editing on my original PC.

GGRR this is so annoying as I really want to watch the two episodes i bought today! I am lost on the train without watching something! Hmm

Resync the whole collection to your work PC now. Watch the programmes. Resync the whole collection to your home PC when you get home. You can sync the video whilst leaving the rest alone, I think.

DH has an iphone with work, and he has managed to put some music on it from our home PC even though it syncs with his work laptop. He didn't have to do anything funny with XML files or anything at all tricky. I think he just literally copied files across from one computer to the other and added them to the itunes library. I kept telling him it wouldn't work but it did Blush

RGPargy · 24/09/2010 14:59

OK i did transfer the contents of my phone to the iTunes at work earlier and I thought that if i then did a sync, it might work, although it keeps threatening to delete the contents of my phone......

Will try a sync again tho and see what happens....

" I think he just literally copied files across from one computer to the other and added them to the itunes library"

Obviously that will work. But the OP is at work and their home machine is at home.

This should be easy enough with very little horror involved.

When you connect the iPod to the PC it should give you an option of manually managing the music or of not automatically managing it, if you see what I mean.

If you manually manage it then it won't automatically try to make your iPhone look like your Work PC's iTunes. You can then just drag over the things that you do want, such as those things that you've bought.

tokyonambu · 24/09/2010 15:16

I've just connected an iPhone (3G, 4.1) to iTunes (10 on OSX) which is not that iPhones home library. Ticking "Manage Manually" and then "Apply" first offers to erase the phone.

BadgersPaws · 24/09/2010 15:20

That's helpful.... I presume that if you say "No, don't be stupid" it's all OK?

tokyonambu · 24/09/2010 15:25

The choices are Cancel (which unticks the box and stops the process) or Erase and Sync (which my love for my fellow man is insufficient to try).

RGPargy · 24/09/2010 15:45

OK i have managed to get the programmes over to my iphone by firstly right clicking on "RGPargy's iPhone" and selecting "transfer". This copied everything over to the work's iTunes. I then told iTunes to sync the music (i downloaded a new mix to listen to) and the tv programmes. It did work, but it did delete my current TV programmes that were on the phone (that's fine, i'd watched them anyway) and the music that wasn't purchased via iTunes (that's fine too as there was only a couple of mixes and i have them on my home PC so can re-add them later). Everything else on the iPhone is fine.

I will re-sync again later tonight when i'm home and will see what happens!

Hello Rg ! I'm having a stress with my i-tunes too.

RGPargy · 01/10/2010 12:02

i-Tunes is a totally un-user friendly application! Apple should really sort it out, it's horrible!!
