Housecall has found it but the instructions to delete are complicated, any advice?

I'm no expert on viruses but I have found Microsoft Security Essentials fab at getting rid of all my malware.

Some people online seem to be saying that the free version of Malwarebytes can remove it, you can get it here:
www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

Personally I always preferred AdAware (www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php) but I'm not sure if that will be able to do the job.

I'm not sure that I'd trust Microsoft to do the job. If they were up to the task the virus wouldn't get onto the machine in the first place. The idea of a company selling you an Operating System and then trying to sell you more software to patch the holes in it seems to me more than a bit bizarre...

i've run two malwarebyte scans and adaware and spybot, it's only showing up on housecall, really annoying!

Make sure that Malwarebytes is up to date, an anti-virus/anti-malware product is only as good as it's last update.

MumInBeds · 13/09/2010 14:42

For what it's worth the Microsoft product is completely free, they aren't selling it.

nikkershaw · 13/09/2010 15:35

is the microsoft one on their site i can only find defender already on my pc. no scan has found it yet have run up to date versions. it's weird why would it only show up on one scanner?

Not sure why an updated Malwarebytes wouldn't find it.

If you have instructions to remove it then it's probably worth just following them.

\link{http://threatinfo.trendmicro.com/vinfo/virusencyclo/default5.asp?VName=TROJ%5FGENERIC%2EDIT&VSect=Sn\here are the instructions} :( can't make head or tail of them and housecall won't automatically delete

nikkershaw it's at www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/ :)

Actually those instructions aren't too bad....

Click on all the "learn how" links and just take it a step at a time.

You can always come back with more questions, such as what does "In the left panel, double-click the following: HKEYLOCALMACHINE>SOFTWARE>Microsoft>
Windows>CurrentVersion>Run", which is a little bit ambiguous.

And for the record what it means is...

After running "RegEdit" you should have a window pop up with "My Computer", beneath it might a list of things with + signs. If not click the + sign next to My Computer.

Then click the + sign next to HKEYLOCALMACHINE.
Then click the + slign next to SOFTWARE.

And so on through Microsoft, Windows, CurrentVersion and then click on Run.

nikkershaw · 13/09/2010 17:25

right, am in task manager and cannot find the file anywhere listed

OP posts:
BadgersPaws · 13/09/2010 21:10

OK well that could mean that it might not be running or that it manages to hide itself from task manager (which is technically quite easy to do).

As the instructions say just continue doing the next steps.
