I've tried searching in the Deleted Items, which is where it would be, but they only go back to the beginning of this year. I'm trying to look at one from about October last year. Any way I can find earlier deleted items?

Depends whether you hit 'delete' for mail you have read (some people have a "tidy" habit like this, and regret it months, days or just minutes later, if they have deleted a message and didn't mean to).

Outlook Express is quite likely to have prompted you to allow it to "compress" mailboxes at some point - it seems quite likely if you had by any chance deleted the mail item - that it will no longer be in any old files on the hard drive.

Sorry, it's a problem if someone does decide to delete messages but months later wishes not to have done so. I tend to create new folders every few months to keep 2009Q1 (Quarter 1) and so on. Each folder gets a few months worth of messages, all can be searched quite easily, but by moving messages to these archive folders, the messages no longer "jam up" the Inbox.
