I have just returned from holiday and my sky+ box is on stand by mode but the light is flashing and it woun't turn on.
I have rang sky and they say it's knackered.

Apparently i have to pay £65 to get a new one is this right or are they scamming me

Silly question but have you tried turning it off at the plug and back on again? This seems to work for a lot of problems when my box goes funy.

When my box stopped working properly in past we phoned sky and they said £65 for call out fee for someone to look at it, then repair fees on top of that and we could still find that we need a new box which would have to be paid for as well. So we said cancel it then and we will change to freeeview (something I'd thought about before but decided that if sky not working anymore then now would be a good time to make the change). however when we asked for it to be cancelled the person on the phone decided to try some sort of online update to the box and this worked saving us £65+!!!
We were past the end of our 12 month contract when our box broke.
Do you know if you are still in the contract period or not? If you are after the 12 months it may well be worth telling them to cancel and see if they can come up with an offer. If you have had the box less than 12months then you could maybe argue that it should still be under guarantee?

I had the same as cupofcoffee, had to pay for someone to come round & try and fix it & then probably pay for a new box.

We did the same, told them we were cancelling and then they offered us a free box if we stayed with them.

hth

the warranty is out on it. we tried turning it off and on numerous times but it didn't do anything.
i told sky we wanted to leave and they were happy for us to leave without offering us anything

i am watching a few on ebay so if i can get hold of a sky+ box i will cancell the call out

if it isn't working then you are paying for a service you aren't receiving.
Can't you cancel, then rejoin in a month as a new customer, get a new box etc?

cupofcoffee · 31/07/2010 14:11

I would leave TBH. Then you could rejoin as a new customer after a bit or get partner to sign up as new customer if it was in your name. Or you could look at alternatives, freeview/freesat/virgin/BT.
DH and i have decided that if/when the box packs up we will leave and then either join again later or get something else. I am not paying £65 for someone to come out and then tell me I need a new box fitting for £100 or whatever. We used to have cable in our old house and they would always repair it remotely or on the one time that could not be done they sent someone out to fix it but we never got charged for this.

right well i have cancelled the call out and have purchased a sky + hd box for £65. So will have sky hd and have not had to pay the robbing gits any money
