HTC Desire vs iPhone 3GS

They are the same price (I can't afford an iPhone 4).

What do you think?

Can I make it do my email, my facebook, my MN?

Battery life is equally shit on both or marginally less rubbish on one of them?

DP has an iphone and you can see your voicemails and poke them to play the one you want, I quite like that.

The iPhone 3GS can do email, Facebook (both through a web page and a much easier to use Facebook app) and Mumsnet.

And to be honest it will do those things about as well as an iPhone 4G would.

No idea on battery life.

The thing you described is "Visual Voicemail", if you get a "proper" iPhone contact as opposed to just popping any old SIM into the phone you should get it. However do check with the phone provider before committing to anything if it's important.

Ah yes, visual voicemail

I woud have to get a proper SIM or else the data costs would kill me I think.

I have a HTC Desire and love it. Battery lasts all day even with a lot of internet usage. Great apps for it.

Never heard of visual voicemail, not sure if its available on Desire or not.

Hulababy · 12/07/2010 17:02

I have an iPhone 3GS which I love!

DH has an HTC phone, although not the desire (ti solder than that!) but he really doesn't like it and is intendin on replacing it with an iPhone asap.

BadgersPaws · 12/07/2010 17:04

Visual Voice mail needs some co-operation from the mobile phone network provider. There are definitely apps you can get that would run on the Desire that "could" do it (I don't think it comes with such a thing "out of the box") but you might find that it just won't work on your network.

If Visual Voice Mail is a deal breaker then add it to the list of things to check with the phone people.

TrillianAstra · 12/07/2010 17:20

Not really a deal breaker, just a thing I have seen that is cool.

Feel free to tell meother cool things your phones can do that I might like. Mostly I want to be able to do emails and a bit of internetting as well as the usual calling/texting.

On the Desire you can Swype which is a much better/faster way of texting.

Desire supports Flash which the 3GS doesn't. Desire can multitask which the 3GS can't.

Desire has a removeable memory card so easy to expand the memory in it. Also a removable battery and tehre are rumours that there will soon be a HTC endorsed battery which will last a lot longer. Will be easy to swap battery over when this happens. Iphone you can't remove battery.

TrillianAstra · 12/07/2010 17:30

What is Swype?

You don't have to tap each letetr when you're texting, you just swipe your finger from one letter to the next without taking it off the phone screen. You don't have to put spaces in as it recognises where the spaces should be. Still has predective text capability so will bring up words it thinks you're aiming towards and you can just swipe that word. Its a lot quicker. You can use it when inputting text/a message say on MN on your phone as well as normal phone messages.

I use HulloMail for my visual voicemail and it is brilliant. Its free to download and use (also works on iphones and Blackberry phones). You can also send friends voice messages for free, which is good fun!

CreepyFunbags · 27/07/2010 12:10

I've got a Desire, I don't know anything about iPhones to be honest but many reviewers think the Desire is better than the iPhone 4.

CreepyFunbags · 27/07/2010 12:12

Oh and yes Facebook, MN etc. all work fine!
