White picket fence plus roses?

Hello all,

We're having a white, mini (two foot!)wooden picket fence put in on Friday (Oooooh exciting!) and I'm really looking forward to planting lots of miniature pink roses and dianthus against it!

However, the other half is kicking up saying I can't plant them as it will loosen the fence?

Is this true?! White picket fences are always pictured with roses? Does anybody know how far I have to plant my flowers to keep the fence secure or is someone telling me porkies!

I have a sneaky suspicion that Mr thinks a mini white fence covered in flouncy namby pamby pink flowers is a threat to his masculinity

plant away honey! the rules say that you should plant at least a foot away but plant closer & im sure they will be fine. as the air can still circulate through. the fence itself not 'planted' so any plants (herbaceous)that are around it will not affect it at all. make sure you think about how it will look in the winter when considering your plant choice.

Excellent! Thank you Terra.
Not too concerned with winter. All my plants except some Sweet Williams I bought by mistake are hardy perennial so as long as they come back again in the spring I'm happy!
