I only aquired a garden for the first time in my adult life last year when we moved so am fairly new to all of this. Have got spinach, rocket, courgette and beetroot all on the go with some success but slugs and snails have trashed the spinach and courgette plants I'm gutted! I was so pleased with them!

So far I've tried beer and organic pellets with little if any success and dh went out on a dusk mission last night and got rid of about 20 by hand. We are about to try eggshells and sand paper, any other ideas?

I've used broken egg shell or course gravel around the base of plants and had some success. But all the rain we've had has allowed something to climb up the pots and cut through the stems of my peppers! Fortunately there are some 'spares' still in the greenhouse.

We're plauged by pigeons at the moment. DH
has had to suspend netting over the seedlings to stop them being pulled up.

I collect every night & dd1 goes out with salt. We also have tonnes of pellets down & nemoslug. We are starting to win....

minx I have been using a combination of eggshells, coffee grounds (from Sainsburys cafe)and lately, when weather turned into a slug's dream, these - scroll down to see slugstoppa also. The slugstoppa (not fail safe)I put in a circle around a set of plants. The other one (advanced slug killer)a friend gave me some last weekend and I have the feeling that this is working better than the slugstoppa as my plants seem to have survived the latest wet weather almost unbelievably.

I was chopping them in half but it's a bit revolting and you can't be there all the time

HairyWoman · 10/06/2010 13:21

slugstoppa needs to be an unbroken circle btw

Copper tape seems to be working so far in raised beds.

This year has been my worst for slugs - are any of the slug pellets bird safe these days? and do they work?
its so demoralising to see healthy plants struggle with the slimy critters

HairyWoman · 11/06/2010 19:31

Yes the ones I refer to in my link above

I use a combo of copper rings and slug stoppa. My delphiniums are amazing this year, in fact the only probs I have at the moment are hostas and peppers which weren't properly protected.
