Newbie needs advice on potatoes and onions!

Hello
Have planted some potatoes (first and second earlies) in potato bags this year - 3 plants per bag using vegetable growing compost.
I kept building up the soil as they were growing but now they're absolutely massive, about 2-3 foot over the top of the bag and hanging over, too heavy. They have lots of leaves but look extremely leggy. What should I do.

Almost the same problem with onions (a giant variety). Planted from sets in a raised bed they now have hugely long stems that lie flat and messy. I pulled one or two up to inspect and they are now even smaller than the original set. Should I trim them? Are they a lost cause?!

Thanks

new to all this too!

with the spuds, apparently they wont be ready till the flowers die down. - but mine hasnt flowered yet. Mine are also massive - looks very impressive - hope lots of spuds in there! Only planted 3 seed pototoes in one large pot but the greenery is about 3 foot and very bushey.

Not growing onions but think they too get very long - did you thin out the stragglers to allow room for the fittest plants to grow? Are they too close together do you think?

An onion grower will be along soon......

I think it depends on the type of potato, not all flower. Look up the type you've planted online and see how many weeks from planting it says. If they got frosted at any point they might need a little longer.

With onions I think they do the foliage first and the bulbs swell relatively late in the process, mine are the same at the moment. I don't know for definite though, this is just what I've read on the gardening forums in anticipation of my spud and onion crops.
