Play Area Ground Cover

At the bottom of our garden we have made a little play area for our DS. It tends to have the best shade of the whole garden (due to nearby fences, sheds, trees, etc).

Currently we have a small plastic sandpit and a ball pool plus some plastic cushioned mats.

The problem is that under the mats the grass gets destroyed and there are mushrooms growing under the sandpit! The ground gets a little churned up and without moving everything, I can't get the mower in.

I've toyed with the idea of covering the whole area in play bark except that the bark would get dragged over the rest of the lawn and putting in a separator could be a trip hazard.

Do any MN's have any suggestions that I might not of considered?

you can get squishy-ish types square mats that fit together but let the grass grow through. That way, you can mow over it to cut the grass but the grass wouldn't get churned up. Check out here not sure on price though.
