Catching lily beetles shagging

I've just caught eight lily beetles in the act of carnal congress. It slows them down and makes them easy to catch.

I thoroughly recommend it - and they died happy

Oh yes they are always at it. I put them in a tic tac box and put it in the bin.

How do you know?

Yes, they are an uninhibited bunch!

HecateQueenOfWitches · 23/05/2010 22:13

they die after mating?

asmallbunchofflowers · 23/05/2010 22:23

Yes, if you catch them while they're distracted and squash 'em!

FlyMeToDunoon · 24/05/2010 07:36

And when cross, as in being interupted during sex they click at you.
Very pretty but Destroy your lillies.
The grubs produce yucky brown stuff designed to resemble poo [or maybe it is poo] all over lilly leaves. Ick.

GrendelsMum · 24/05/2010 13:47

It's amazing how much easier they are to catch and squash when distracted - they seem to go all post-coital and forget to hide or fly away.

I've not made them click at me yet, though.

The clicking is very weird. So much sound from such a small bug.

taffetacat · 24/05/2010 14:38

I put them in a jar and let the DC watch.

atomicsnowflake · 24/05/2010 22:06

I caught two flies who were 'at it' on my washing about a week ago.

They were fed to my youngest's venus fly trap!

ShellingPeas · 25/05/2010 18:50

Apparently the clicking is to alert other lily beetles in the area there is danger about and sometimes you can see others you haven't got to in time fall onto the soil on their backs where they are practically invisible.

I have 'The Stone of Death' where all lily beetles I find (shagging or otherwise) meet their sacrifical end.

HecateQueenOfWitches · 26/05/2010 18:41

I was parked up in a hidden quiet area, having a cigarette reading a magazine and 2 black thingies with wings hopped onto my windscreen and proceeded to make sweet music. They wouldn't shift even when I put the wipers on.

I didn't realise I'd parked up in an insects dogging area.

We're in the weekly round-up, folks!
