I have the exact same thing, and have my gardening ILs coming this afternoon to check that it is indeed rhubarb!!! It's a new house, so we didn't realise we had any until this massive triffid thing appeared a few weeks ago. It is taking over half of our vegetable plot! My parents had rhubarb many years ago, and I never remember flowers or it getting quite as massive as this!

I hope it is rhubarb as I love the stuff. Will report back to you later

yes. mine was huge. i pulled the middle flowering bit out the other day ( as all the gardening websites advise) it was about 4ft tall.
some of the leaves/stalks had got MASSIVE as well. so i pulled them all off as they would have been tough.

we ate it last year. from the pics i can see online it looks the same and the flowers are def the same.

Rhubarb does indeed flower - ours has flowered each year but our allotment neighbours has not flowered in the five years that I have seen it so I guess it depends on variety too. As you say, cut the flower stalk off and enjoy the other rhubarb stalks.

GrendelsMum · 20/05/2010 14:00

Just to confirm what Sis has said - yes, rhubarb flowers.

Yes, rhubarb does flower. Break it off to prolong the eating season of the rhubarb (it goes tough after flowering).

this is gunnera which is probably what your friend meant. Don't eat gunnera. It is easy to distinguish, gunnera is vast and has prickly stems and a tall dark flower bud. It spreads like had so needs a contained spot (mine is on an island in a large pond). It is not very frost-hardy.
Rhubarb has smooth stems and a white flower bud.

mine was a white flower bud.

i knew i was right.

i only brought the thing last year.
