Covering a pond

Hi we have always had a pond and now we have a 20month old dd that can undo any gate latch, hasp or bolt!!!!

What have you used to childproof your pond please

My friend pond is covered with really strong square wire (not sure the tec name) squares are about 10cm and its strong enough for a adult to stand on not sure how its fix but it would be heavy it was good enough for ofsted she was a childminders and was good enough to be approved to be foster parents.
