Sweet smelling climber for a north facing wall please!

Hi,

I would like to find a pretty, sweet smelling climber for the north facing wall on the back of the house. The plan is to grow it up either side and possibly over the patio doors.

Oh and I will have to grow it from pots.

I would be so grateful for any ideas.

Thank you!

I'm no expert but thinking maybe a clematis?

From memory Akebia Quinata likes being on a north wall. I don't know if it smells very strongly though.

We have a russian vine on ours!

Hydrangea petiolaris would be a good choice, does well in shade, flowers smell lovely and can be grown in a (large) pot.

Thank you all for your replies. I'll have a good gander at some pics.

Jackie - We tried a Clematis and it died a miserable death. The pot wasn't nearly as big at the one's we have now, so maybe that will make all the difference.

I dont think there are any sweet smelling clematis which you can grow in pots.
The ones with scented flowers (armandii and montana) are large growing and need to be planted in the ground.

good point panacotta - we have an armandii on a north facing wall which is why i suggested it, but you are right it is in the ground.

Sorry FG i'm not much help!

I didn't realise that hydrangea petiolaris is scented, Pannacotta - that's a good thing to have learnt!

If the pot is close to the wall, it will be in the 'rain shadow' and won't get so much rain as the rest of the garden, so you'll need to water it more than the rest of the garden.
