tree/shrub for DS's first birthday

I was thinking it would be nice to plant a tree or shrub in the garden to mark Ds's first birthday. Problem is garden is small and already dominated by a large cherry tree. Any suggestions?
Will probably have to plant something for older DD as well.

A nice idea!

We've done this for DS and went for mini apple trees. They've been planted at a suitable distance for goal posts (DH's idea!)

A good distance for a hammock as well?

How about something that you could put in a large pot and keep on the patio and take with you if you ever move!

Either something fruiting, or something in flower for his birthday?

My mum bought us some snowdrops for DD's Feb birthday.
