Novice greenhouse owner - silly questions!

Have been growing veg in my raised borders for a few years (with reasonable success ) but have never, until yesterday, had a greenhouse, so do you mind if I ask a couple of silly questions....

Do you leave the door open in the daytime, does it stay closed all of the time or does it not matter? It's got double doors on one of the short sides.

Do you water everything just once a day in the evening? Do you need to water more / less than if the plants were in the garden?

I am insanely excited about my greenhouse and can't wait to start using it so any tips for a 'first-timer' would be greatly appreciated

Well I'm a bit of a novice too (have had mine 6 months), but I'm opening my door in the daytime at the moment as I think it's best to let the air circulate more. In the winter opened it occasionally on nice days. I guess it depends a bit on what you are growing in it. I water once a day at the moment (was much less in the winter), but I'm not consistent on the time of day. I think plants tend to need a little more water as there is no natural rainfall inside and the hot sun tends to dry things out faster too.

What are you hoping to grow by the way?

If you have mice in the garden it's best to open the windows rather than the door ! You should close the door and any windows overnight.

You need to water more than the rest of the garden as there's no benefit from rain/dew - so at this time of year we do once a day in the greenhouse, but at the height of the summer maybe twice a day.

Greenhouses are fab!

Good point Bramshott thanks. The roof vent on ours opens automatically when it gets hot which is handy.

Thanks

I had a lovely childfree hour in my new greenhouse this morning while the kids were at school and preschool - heaven!

So far, I've put in some tomato plants and strawberry plants and have started some green beans, courgettes, red peppers, basil and rocket from seed. Got loads more that I want to do though! Have also been weeding / thinning / planting in the raised borders too. What a lovely morning

I suppose next year I'll be able to start things off much earlier with having the greenhouse at the start of the season.

I'm impressed (and slightly envious) by your automatically opening roof vent snorkie! My greenhouse is a secondhand, slightly sorry looking thing with nothing automatic about it! Hopefully it will do the job though!

Mine was a second hand one too gingertoo and the vent opener is the grandest bit of it! It was an xmas pressie from my dad which was an excellent gift imo.

Brilliant gift - I will have to drop hints (I usually get bubble bath )
