growing veg/fruit in a greenhouse- need some basic advice pls

Completely totally clueless about gardening but we have recently moved into a house with a garden and a little greenhouse at the back of the garden.

Want to try tomatoes, strawberries..

what do i need to buy - some large pots and the little tomato plants/strawb plants? How many? Normal compost? Can I plant in bags -if so what type? (on low budget)best place to buy compost/veg- homebase or garden centers?

Homebase is probably a good place to start and they have very reasonable seedlings, growbags and strawberry pots.

Strawberry pots or hanging baskets are good for strawbs as they need to be kept off the ground to prevent rotting. A medium size pot often holds 6 - 10 plants. My Homebase had an offer on when I visited today if you bought the strawb pot you got 6 free small plants I think.

For tomatoes, think about what sort you'd like to eat, maybe get a plant of cherry, ( Sungold are nice ), normal size ( Gardenere's Delight are easy to grow ) and beefsteak if you like them. Tomatoes like lots of room for their roots, so best to get a grwobag, upend it and cut it in half so you can put two plants in it with lots of room for roots rather than 3 with a shallow root run.

Garden centres may have more choice of variety of plants but Homebase ones are a great place to start if you're not too fussed about this. Homebase own brand grow bags I think are £1.49 each.

You will also need some bamboo canes or similar to prop up your tomato plants as they grow and some tomato liquid feed ( again Homebase own brand is fine ) to feed toms with once a week once it flowers.
