My lovely shiny new raised veggie beds are beckoning and I had a trip out the other day to buy a few bits and pieces which I just couldn't resist!!

I've already got some rocket, spinach and spicy salad seedlings out in a sunny spot and have King Eds and Charlotte potatoes growing in dustbins - but I am desperate to plant out some more bits

I bought:

Onions
Garlic
Jerusalem artichokes (don't know why)
Courgettes
Marrow
Pumpkin
Red Pepper

and I have asparagus peas and tomato plants at large seedling stage in the downstairs loo aka my temporary greenhouse.

Can I plant any of the above out yet and feel reasonably confident that they will not get a frost thrashing? (Try saying that quickly!!) My garden is south facing, and I have the veggie beds against the eastern wall so they are in full sun now and start to lose it by mid afternoon.

yes if you cover with fleece on cold nights (we had an air frost last night in Norfolk).

But best to wait for a bit.

Woo hooo! thanks Does waiting until the weekend qualify as 'waiting for a bit'

I think it's the spring air and sunshine, I get all excited when I see the garden come to life again!!

I would definitely wait a good few weeks to put the courgette ( and marrow ) and pumpkin out. The pepper you need to leave until June, if it at all. They like it really, really hot.

If there's a frost they will all die as they aren't hardy. I am in Kent - south facing baking hot garden and I won't risk anything til mid May.

Ok - if I can at least do my garlic, onions and JA's that'll keep me happy for a while! Thank you x

All my stuff is tucked in.

LOL Who, you are just like me! I've just planted a few seeds up in trays in the green house and some indoors on the windowsill. Potatoes and onions in at the weekend I hope

My mum told me that garlic benefits from frost (she's a very keen gardener and I'm a novice). I planted mine in Autumn and it's looking very happy at the moment. Did the same last year and got a lovely crop.

Awww, can't believe your mum didn't ring and tell me that Haven't got any garlic this year (first vege patch ever) but will definitely plant some in the Autumn.
