Leaf spot on my photinia

Well, that's what I think it is.

I have a standard red robin that's in a big pot. It's been doing well over the last 3 years but this Spring it looks awful. Lots of leaves have dropped off it and it has blotches/spots over the remaining leaves.

Anyone else have the same problem?

Yes yes yes. And I feel a semi expert because I went to my local garden centre and asked advice.

Now.... Are the black spots on leaves that were there over the winter? Because these plants are snsitive to the cold/frost/ subzero temps and black spotches can easily be due to frost and extreme cold. Leaves that have been affected may well drop off, we seem to have lost quite a few.

At this time of year there is a lot of bright new red growth and if that is affected too then it is more likely to be an infection similar to black spot on roses which you can treat with a suitable spray.

The man said to hold off spraying and check which leaves were affected and for ours it was not the new growth suggesting that it was frost bite that had caused the black marks. Since I went we have had no more frosty nights and the new growth has not been affected. They are not really as hardy as they seem and after the v cold winter they have struggled.

Yes, I think the spots were there over winter. As far as I can see, the new growth is ok.

Wasn't sure if it's an infection but I shall definitely hold off with the sprays and see what happens.

I am so thrilled to give out gardening advice! It is the ONLY thing I know!! If there is no more frost / subzero temps ( and who knows on that front?!) no black marks should appear on the new growth. Good luck, hopefully now it should recover.
