burning garden waste?

Hi, does anyone know if it illegal to burn garden waste? we have a huge pile of tree branches and bushes we need to get rid of. Too many to go into compost bin, so would it be ok to burn them in back garden then put ash into compost bin. Ive got a feeling its illegal though. I would obviously warn neighbours just in case they were going to put out their washing!

Thanks

No, it's not illegal to burn garden waste however if you cause a nuisance whilst doing it i.e smoke then the council can take action against you. See here for more details and advice. In reality, it is unlikely unless you are a repeat offender.

Offer the timber on Freecycle. When I did, it was all carted off by people with log-burners.

Does your council not have a collection service for garden waste for composting?

Maybe you could get a chimnea to burn them in and keep yourselves warm of an evening while sitting out with a glass of wine (or two)
