peat free compost is a bit crap isn't it?

It's just huge chunks of stuff in there. Not much different from bark chips.

I do make my own compost but don't have enough for my pots, but nothing seems to grow that well in the peat free stuff.

Has anyone found any decent peat free brands?

Gosh, I wish I could give you some of ours (home-made compost), we always have too much!
I imagine the Council run schemes are good for compost --it includes a lot of rich food waste, after all. Might be worth finding out where they sell it.

Good idea. My dad always get the council compost and he thinks it's good stuff.

It's fab and cheap. Our council charges £1.50 a tonne atm.

but here's an article with some comments and recommendations - I've used the one they recommend and not had any problems, although I do agree that there are some chunks which are too large - I ended up pre-sieving it before filling up seed trays.

The council made stuff is, yes, because they essentially amateurs. In fact its not compost in the sense of a growing medium, its compost in the sense of a soil conditioner, and thats all you can really use it as.
