Paid help in the garden

Can anyone advise a suitable rate of pay for friend's teenage son to mow our front and back garden? Reckon it'll take 1-1.5 hours. (That's literally all we need him for).

Minimum wage details

There are three levels of minimum wage, and the rates from 1 October 2009 are:

  • £5.80 per hour for workers aged 22 years and older
  • a development rate of £4.83 per hour for workers aged 18-21 inclusive
  • £3.57 per hour for all workers under the age of 18, who are no longer of compulsory school age

£5 an hour seems reasonable to me if it's an uncomplicated job.

Wow how big are those lawns!!!
Can I do it I love mowing :-)
Bear in mind it may need doing more than once a week when it's really growing.
I'd give him a trial - pay him fairly for that depending on how he does - call it a one off if he's rubbish - if he's good set a rate you're happy to pay and can afford - if the works regular it'll soon add up - for both of you

Also how much out of his way are you? Will he have to travel to you - is it worth him getting there for a fiver?

The lawns actually aren't that big at all! I think it might just be that DH does tend to spin it out on the odd occasion he does it, what with the beer-break, kicking the football around with DS... Gardening jobs are the bane of our lives, basically, and after us constantly falling out over it last summer we are resorting to paid help - hence the query! The lad in question lives round the corner - 2 mins walk away - so yes, I think he would consider £5 an hour worth his while.
