The garden is 10m x 5m (estate type). We want to plant 2 silver birch or silver-birch like trees towards a corner to create an effect, probably 1.5 to 2m apart. What would you recommend? We want something with a slim upright habit but with white-ish bark.

TIA

I have just planted a Snow Queen, apparently an improved version of jaquemontii. It produces the white stem on trees only two years old. On the leaflet it said it was "broadly columar".

The trees bark is already peeling, unlike my other silver birch which is over 4 years old and still has a very brown trunk.

sorry "columnar" - should preview properly!

Silver birch trees will fill your house with seed...

I love Robinia (sp) not sure how big they get though so you might need to check this. I have one and it is about 10 ft at mo - been in 2 years. Lovely acid green foliage imo.

Robinia are lovely trees but would be too lrage/spreading for this garden IMO.
I like Chinese birch, they are slimmer than Silver Birch and have lovely coloured trunks with pinky tints.

Maples are nice too. They have lovely autumn colour - think they come in a range of sizes... will see if I can find some...

Go for hamalayan silver birch (can't remmeber the latin - sorry)
They are a striking white as apposed to the silvery grey version - stunning!

My silver birch is in front of my house and my car, windows and just about everything else in the vicinity are covered with seed, pollen and leaves, depending on the time of year!!

just bumping because we're also after a small striking tree with year-round appeal for a tiny garden. I was similarly thinking birch but this thread has warned me off -- v useful.

Anyone fanatical about a particular type of acer? How do you choose?
