This isn't really a gardening related question...more retail...but still...where do you buy your flowers and how long do they tend to last for? I find supermarkets a bit hit and miss but overall think the best ones I've had in terms of longevity have been Tescos.

What does everybody else think?

The Tesco daffodils are great value just w 100% free for £1 i have a big bunc on the window sill and they look lovely/ I also bought a Spring bouquet from Sainsburys at the weeken Narcissi , Iris ,Tulips for £2.99 they usually last quite a while Morrisons daffs are nothing but leaves

I agree! My husband bought me some quite expensive flowers for Valentine's Day and they just died within 2 days! I said he should have gone to Tesco....

I'd quite like to send mum some flowers for Mother's Day but I'm not sure if Florist flowers travel that well..

I bought my MiL a seasonal bouquet from Wiggly Wigglers and she said it was absolutely beautiful.

Waitrose seem to be quite good - I've got some 9 day old UK-grown tulips next to me, and they're still going well.

Definitely Waitrose, Sainsburys also pretty good (we boycott Tescos in this house!).
I try and get fair tread roses or locally grown flowers if I can, eases my conscience!

i dont see the point of roses which dont have any smell David Austin are the only ones i can think of online and they are ££££s

I am crazy for anemones so this time of year have a bit of experience of buying cut ones as my sad attempts here in the garden never have long enough stems for the vase.

In the last 6 weeks have bought anemones from :

  • Waitrose
  • Sainsbury's
  • Local florist

Waitrose only lasted 5 days. Local florist about a week. Sainsbury's ( which were more expensive than Waitrose ) lasted 2 and a half weeks.

Good old Sainsbo's.

Greenfingeredsarah - what about some potted spring bulbs rather than cut flowers? I did some Iris reticulata that are looking good for Mother's Day.

GrendelsMum · 23/02/2010 17:31

Oh, that's a good idea Taffetacat

For some reason, I really don't like anenomes.

That's a good thread idea GrendelsMum.....

Great thanks taffetacat I'll look into that. I do love fresh flowers in the house, but it can prove a pricey habit if you're buying them all the time.

What are you planning for Mother's Day? RHS have some great fruit, veg and flowers prints they've brought out just in time - they'll last much longer than any bought or grown flowers here's a link
