That's it really! Didn't get round to it in the autumn. Thanks.

I jolly hope not...

Will follow this to benefit from more competent advice

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 21/02/2010 09:16

I've pruned round this time and a bit later, they were fine. But I'm not very competent so be warned! But if you think about it they are still fairly dormantish so if you do it now they should be fine for when they start the growing season shortly.

Felt worried about your roses so have just googled, now is a good time, especially for the modern roses which flower on new growth. So get going with your secateurs.

aJumpedUpPantryBoy · 21/02/2010 13:53

I've been doing mine this week as well so I'm hoping it's OK.

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 21/02/2010 18:10

Pantry, did you sort your mobile? After OK start with the Nokia it has gone back and I have an iPhone.

GrendelsMum · 21/02/2010 18:11

I went on a pruning course last year and was told that actually, in a hard winter like this has been, you're better pruning at the beginning of spring (i.e. now-ish) than at the beginning of winter. So I've not done mine yet...

belgo · 21/02/2010 18:14

You shouldn't do it in autumn, you should do it after winter because the old flowers protect the plant.

fishie · 21/02/2010 18:24

yy and if prune too early in cold weather it will stimulate growth which will be got by frosts. i haven't done any of mine yet.

Pannacotta · 21/02/2010 18:34

I think I read that rambling roses are supposed to be pruned in the autumn but all others are better done in spring so no not too late at all...

GrendelsMum · 21/02/2010 18:53

Rambling roses always seem totally impervious to any kind of treatment!

Pannacotta · 21/02/2010 18:57

Oooh GrendelsMum was hoping you'd show up.
Any thoughts on my thread re evergreen shrubs?

NorrisMcWhirter · 21/02/2010 19:14

OOOOH! That's great news. Thanks for all the advice, I will be pruning forthwith

LOL! Thanks. I always get a bit nervous pruning stuff because I don't know what I'm doing (!) but I think I need to be a bit sterner with my roses as they are getting gangly.

The lol was because I never saw myself avidly reading RHS pages...until now....

WynkenBlynkenandNod - I ordered the iphone yesterday - it should be here tomorrow!
What happened with the Nokia?

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 21/02/2010 20:18

It came to a head in A&E with DD for her arm and I was trying to send an email and couldn't work out if I had and lost my temper with it.

I absolutely love my iPhone and don't think you will regret it. Was in Wilkinson's today and could google the varios varities of veg as I went along, very handy!

aJumpedUpPantryBoy · 21/02/2010 20:25

Well, if it helps with gardening it's got to be good.
I carried on dithering and then yesterday my sister said 'I know you're going to get one, you know you're going to get one, so put us all out of our misery and order the bloody thing'
Well, what could I do?

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 21/02/2010 20:34

I was like that but then had my crisis and the relief when I marched in shop and came out with one was huge.

DS loves playing the free bubble wrap game if we are out and about and have to wait. Have caught him on tape when he accidentally spat milk out of his mouth whilst recording a good night message to DH which I emailed. Have been able to keep my brother up to date with pics of DC's, he lives abroad. Did shopping using the Ocado app, listen to more music, fab for MNetting, can use Skype off the wifi and it does those little reminder things so I don't forget to go to parents evening. Just fab, you really won't regret it.
