How do I level my lawn??

Just bought a place with perhaps 10m x 5 m lawn. Evidently at some stage the lawn was smaller and someone has grassed over garden beds, but of course the end result has subsided with a distinct line between old lawn and new lawn!

My options are- to lift the new turf and under fill it: big job and you'd need to cut the turf off dead level.

Laying new turf over the old to the correct level.

To top dress the dipped bits: How? Lawn sand? Sieved topsoil?

My mum says (in the Spring) a fine layer of topsoil, let the grass shoot through, then another layer etc until the correct level is reached. She reckons it'd be once a month for 6 months.

What do you think?

I tried this at my last house. The sieved topsoil was the best way as far as I could tell and definitely involved less backbreaking work. It takes a bit of time but works eventually.

Be prepared for the surprisingly large amount of soil you'll need. Definitely get someone to deliver it.
