Anyone know the going rate for a gardener in London?

My friend's husband works as a gardener, he's agreed to come and do a day's work for us. It's a tiny tiny yard with two horribly overgrown and weedy beds - a completely out of control climbing rose and ivy spilling over from next door are the biggest issues. We're planning on paying him but haven't talked about a figure as ostensibly he's doing us a favour and we'll be giving him a thank you present - really this is just an opportunity to help them out a bit as they're very skint. So I want to be generous but have no idea even of a ball park figure - can anyone give me some idea of a reasonable hourly rate as a starting point?

We pay £20 an hour. 2 hourly visit every fortnight.

I saw a sign up near us (east London, I bet parts of West London would be pricier) advertising gardening services and the prices ranged from £12 to £20 an hour, presumably depending on how hard the labour is.
